The distributor is the nerve center of the mechanical ignition system that performs two specific functions. First, it induces the ignition coil to create a spark at a precise timing that is required. Second, it directs the spark to the proper cylinder. To do both jobs, the distributor greatly relies on the distributor rotor and the distributor cap.
