The distributor is the nerve center of the mechanical ignition system that performs two specific functions. First, it induces the ignition coil to create a spark at a precise timing that is required. Second, it directs the spark to the proper cylinder. To do both jobs, the distributor greatly relies on the distributor rotor and the distributor cap. The rotor is the rotating arm located inside the cap, specifically on top of the distributor shaft. The ignition coil is connected to the rotor, which rotates inside the cap.
