The ignition system of the vehicle plays the vital role of creating a high-energy spark that will ignite the fuel and air mixture at exactly the right time so that the engine will operate smoothly and productively. An important component that does the job of routing the high voltage from the ignition coil to the spark plug in the correct firing order is the distributor. This is composed of a rotating arm called the rotor and the distributor cap. The metal portion of the rotor contacts with the central high voltage cable from the coil and this is done via a spring loaded carbon brush. This metal portion passes close to the output contacts which are connected thru high tension cables into the spark plug at each cylinder.

The distributor cap covers the internal rotor, which switches the high sparking voltage to the spark plugs such that these are fired in a correct sequence. Typically, the cap has one post for each cylinder and in Points Ignition System a central post is employed for the coil voltage coming into the distributor. In High Energy Ignition (HEI) where there is no central post, the ignition coil is positioned on top of the distributor. Inside the cap is a terminal that corresponds to each post and the plug terminals are positioned around the circumference so that they are set to a correct firing order and send the secondary voltage to the right spark plug at the right time.
