The cold start valve is basically an additional injector solenoid that may be mounted in the intake manifold or in the intake air distribution, in line with the fuel rail. It is sometimes called as the fifth injector that does the job of allowing additional air into the intake manifold during a cold start, specifically on fuel-injected engines. It is consists of an electrical connection, fuel inlet, and a fuel outlet. It is energized via the vehicle’s starting system and the thermo-time switch. It sprays extra fuel through the manifold as the starter is spinning the engine over. This cold start valve is constructed similar to the regular fuel injector. The prime difference is that the cold start valve injection time is measured in seconds instead in milliseconds performed in the regular injectors.

When the key is inserted into the ignition switch and set into the start position, power from the double relay is transmitted to the cold start valve. However, the fuel is only injected into the intake air distributor when the cold start valve is grounded by the thermo-time switch. The prime purpose of the cold start valve is to efficiently inject fuel through the intake air stream when the engine is cold. This is necessary so as to richen the fuel and air mixture for quick and easier starting.
